MADISON HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE:

THE EARLY ARCHITECTURE OF MADISON, INDIANA  By John T. Windle and Robert M. Taylor Jr., 1986.  "The town that time forgot", has one of the finest collections of nineteenth century architecture in the Midwest. Depicted in over 300 photographs are the various residential architectural styles, historic commercial, and public buildings found in Madison, along with exquisite examples of delicate ironwork and other architectural detail.  Each building is carefully dated and described.    Hardcover, 230 pages........$30.00

MADISON - A PICTORIAL HISTORY   By Ron Grimes and Jane Ammeson, 2006.  Illustrated with over 220 vintage photographs, the book explores Madison's history, its architecture and its people in 10 chapters, spanning 100 years from the 1850's to the 1950's. MADISON  1811 -1860: A Study in the Process of City Building  By Donald T. Zimmer, 1974.  Taken from a doctoral dissertation, this scholarly work traces the development of Madison from its founding, through its growth and development until the beginning of the Civil War.  130 pages.......$20.00

JEFFERSON COUNTY INTERIM REPORT OF HISTORIC SITES  By the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, 1989.   A comprehensive inventory of all the historic structures and sites in Madison and Jefferson County, with descriptions, locations and photos.  Book also includes a guide to architectural styles, and a wealth of other information.   125 pages...............$15.00

 

JEFFERSON COUNTY HISTORY:

ECHOES OF JEFFERSON PROVING GROUND  By Sue Baker, 1990.  Jefferson Proving Ground was a U.S. Army ammunition testing ground that displaced nearly an entire township at the start of World War Two.  Sue Baker tells the story of land acquisition, moving of families, relocation of cemeteries, schools and churches, and the effect on the lives of people who were thrust from their homes.  Hardbound with illustrations, 139 pages.........$23.00
